Ravaged by the war for over 2 decades pretty much my existence on earth, there is an attempt to clean up the country by his excellency the almighty, soon to be king if not already. After all winning the war is not enough to keep you in power for 60 years, like in the day and age of our kings, you have to keep doing stuff or these morbid Sri Lankan will forget. Specially with the Pakistani tour and the Kiwi’s en route. You got to pity the bugger, you’d atleast think us Columbians will remember the war with all the media frenzy about IDP’s but, little do we seem to care about that too. Atleast Alexa thinks so, dropping defence.lk, lankaenews & dailymirror way below blogger.com, wordpress.com and lastly twitter.com.

So with the terrorists wiped out, the ol chap is left with wiping out the other daemons terrorizing the country. Namely Alcohol, Tobacco and Adult content. So no more :

  • Porn sites
  • Porn on your mobile phone or PC
  • Adult Films in Cinemas
  • Alcohol (to be banned soon)
  • Tobacco (to be banned soon)

My immediate reaction was for those small movie halls that we as school boys used to cut school and go to, they’ll probably close down. As for porn sites I have my doubts as to how successful SLT will be in this venture. While Porn on your mobile phone will stop perverts sticking their phones up ladies skirts in buses and avoid tragic & embarrassing incidents in girls schools, it makes me wonder isn’t our phone or pc our property and give us the right to store anything we please. Eitherway don’t be surprised if a Cop stops you on the road and goes through your phone gallery.

The soon to be banned Alco & Tobacco will deserve a post on it’s own, when it actually starts to getΒ  implemented. Mean while I’m going to find an encryption for my porn. Let me know your thoughts on the above, not on encryption but on the other important matters?

I’m not a big fan of Alcohol or Tobacco but this all goes back to the role of government doesn’t it? Government isn’t supposed to be your nanny, it’s there to ensure that society doesn’t end up killing itself. Government should stop treating adults like babies, and stop poking their noses into peoples private places!

As for porn, I’ve had hidden porn in this PC of mine for ages, and both my parents who use it never had the slightest clue… I don’t think the government will have any luck with it either… πŸ˜‰

Governments have dallied with banning alcohol in the past – Prohibition for example in the USA, AKA “The Nobel Experiment” in the early 1900’s.

While this was in force it made the sale, manufacture, and transportation of alcohol for consumption illegal as specified in the 18th amendment to the US Constitution. In acted under pressure from the temperance movement what this actually achieved was to create opportunities for corruption as the underworld stepped in to meet the demand created as a result. The illegal manufacture and distribution of liquor, or bootlegging, became rampant, making the likes of Al Capone Kings!

I can only imagine the effect such a move would have in SL, a staggering increase in the manufacture of Kassipu along with an increase in the number of people falling ill or dying as a result of consuming that gut rot, the select few who will become even richer smuggling the spirit that cheers into the country, because the truth is that those that be in power will most certainly continue to imbibe the spirit, ban or no ban, thumbing their finger at us poor folk

@chavie : I doubt that the ordinary cop on the street won’t be able to tell the difference between a Mac and an IBM Compatible. But, I’ve seen the CID techies in action and trust me they know their stuff.

@sigma delta : Agree with you mate. I doubt any of the top chappies have even considered the implications, it’s easy to talk the talk but walking the walk is a different story. It’s gonna be moonshine all over the place, and kudu lal’s in the house.

interesting to hear your thoughts on the ban on porn and adult movies. πŸ™‚

I’m with Sigma D on the issue of how prohibition leads to corruption. In a country like ours which has carried the burden of corruption for ages, it’s a dangerous proposition. After all, if we’re going to be as big a destination for tourists as the Tourism Ministry is planning, how do we plan on keeping them – for whom alcohol and tobacco are synonymous with good times – happy?

As for the porn – well, banning it is just going to raise the standards on how inventive our schoolboys can get. πŸ™‚

Our pseudo-democracy is now in plain view, but the majority of Sri Lankans are still blinded by him bringing the war to an end that they just don’t see it…

Banning of porn and adult films is just going to cause more problems… Think about the frustrated men? πŸ˜› But on a serious note, I really don’t think this will solve anything, it’s just going to make things a lot worse…

Also, about the adult movies, x-rated ones won’t reach the cinemas but apparently explicit movies that are a few notches below x-rated will be played…

but Chaar, I doubt that the CID has enough manpower to keep an eye on every Tom, Dick and Sirisena’s browsing habits and hard drives, do they? πŸ˜‰

@puppeteer : Ya.. there are definitely gonna be a lot of horny guys walking the streets.. you ladies better watch out.

@chavie : I doubt it too.. unless there is this “Big Brother is Watching YOU” in SL too.. Just wanted to highlight the fact that, the Govt have the expertise as opposed to the common belief that, apooo I doubt they can find their “My Documents” folder even.

I agree with Chaarmax – ‘Govt have the expertise’

What if Govt. hire all the top class computer experts in the island – you just have to pay them a little more than what usualany other IT firms pay heer. Some might come even for lesser salaries if they get a good challenge..

After all with US$ 2.6 billion a lot can be done if you put it to good use in an honest way πŸ˜‰
