Water Cooler

July 23, 2009

Many extremists would say with the opening of the economy to the world, Sri Lanka as we (or those old enough to remember the era) knew it has changed for ever. I on the other hand argue this country is still pretty much the same. Old habits die hard.

Counting back the years, our farmers wouldn’t have believed that their sons’ sons would be sitting in air-conditioned offices infront an LCD panel crunching numbers. Women folk bringing their hardworking father/husbands food (ambula) and filling water from near by streams wouldn’t have pictured them selves fighting it out with their male counter-parts in the corporate world.

Walking into office, my first duty is to fill up my Bacardi Limon bottle (wanted to be unique among the countless Absolut bottles in the office). Early morning is peak time at our pantry. The place is packed with girls carrying Martini bottles to the regular plastic variety mostly tucked under their arms while another bottle in their hand. I patiently observe these girls filling their bottles, their friends bottles and the chit chat of that occurs. Many of them are in different sections, so it’s safe to assume that the Water Cooler is the common meeting ground. After 15mins of standing I return with a full bottle of water educated about, “What went wrong in the Pork curry”, “Where to buy Brown belts”, “What happened in Paba” and so on. Very reminiscent of the “linda langa sangamaya” of the bygone era.

In conclusion.. Technology and all these fancy findings might have replaced the town well with the water cooler.. but not the people. 😀

This guy needs help. 😀

True true… If da water cooler is the linda, what would the genu nana thena be? Hmmmm- Can’t really think of a similar place other than the swimmin pool!
N rock shows can be like pel kavi or whateva

@girigoris : well I didn’t think that far.. just equated the cooler to the linda and the martini and vodka bottles to the `mati kalya’s`.

The `nana thena` could be these fancy sports clubs where women for a swim and then spend their afternoon gossiping. 😀
