වෙසක් අසිරි | Vesak Asiri

May 22, 2008

Unlike post ppl on the Blogsphere, I spent my Vesak looong weekend in Colombo. But it was as exciting and event filled as a trip down south or up north would have been. Well I’m sure your dying to know more. So here goes.

Maha Paan (Bread) Dansala.

A group of our friends felt extremely generous last year, and we started a “kos” dansala for Vesak. This year, (after learning the hard way that cleaning 18 jack fruits is no fun) we decided to switch to a simpler, “Paan and Lunu(Onion) Sambol”.

225 loafs of bread. 40 kg of onions. A total of 900 quarters of bread given out to citizens of Sri Lanka. I think that’s a decent “punya karmaya”. 🙂 Although I must say I was teary eyed through most of it. Specially when peeling those darn onions. 😀 Unfortunately we couldn’t save up all the “Paan waati” for pissu.

Other Dansalas

After obtaining a few merits we decided to stop over and cash some of those in. It wasn’t a difficult task, coz there were dansal all over in Colombo. Many “drink dansal” that we stopped and taseted their offering along the way.

Luckily enough, one of our friends had a relation who was giving out a much larger scale “Bath Dansala”. So using the influential powers we managed to skip the cue, and help our selves to hot hot, vegetable fried rice, potato thel dala, soya curry, kadala (gram), chutney and chillie-paste. All served into chafing dishes, buffet style. Now that was a feast.

Later I managed to take some pics of the behind the scenes actions. My gosh, we were humbled at the effort we saw, and figured maybe in another 50 years, we could convert out minuscule dansala into one of similar standard/running.

End of the day, abt 5 dansals conquered. Now that is what you call “Dansal Wandanawa” (Worshiping Dansal).

Vesak Asiri all over CMB

Filled to the brim, and tired out to the max, Cindy and I still managed to catch some Vesak Decor on the way home along Baudhaloka Mw and surroundings. Although traffic was hectic, the mad cyclists were the worst.

Phew… well that’s it folks. Hope this post leaves you at peace, no matter what reliogion you believe in. 🙂

LD… well we used to go on Bicycles. But sadly that time has gone. Now we just scold the hooligans on the bikes cutting through traffic. Trust me we had a lot of fun. 🙂

MC.. indeed you missed a tasty lunu sambol. Def next year! But why aren’t you a fan of dansal? Is it the queue? Rest assured we were giving take-a-way, so no queue in fact we were flagging down vehicles.

PP… rest assured the yummy paan waati’s didn’t get separated and were hopeully consumed together with the paan it self.

Scrump… much fun. I’m allowed to put only a limited amount of pics, without running the risk of identifying myself, and well the “others”.

    Dili.. මොනා කරන්නද මචෝ.. දහස් වාරයක් සමාවෙන්න ඹනෑ.. ලබන වසරේ සියලු දෙනාටම Open Invitation!! 🙂

Living in this part of the world and hating it, your pix made me so hungry (yummm…), very nostalgic and a wee bit teary.
    Thank you for rekindled memories.
I miss Sri Lanka so much and can’t understand how we ourselves have managed to also screw it over at the same time.

Your most welcome Dhammika, and happy to see you drop by. What I have to offer aren’t as mouth watering as Darwin‘s chocolate delights nor a match for the culinary and photographic brilliance of Pradeep. But I feel these simple delights are closer to home. 🙂
